The presence of CSOs in multilateral platforms is crucial. Their participation not only demonstrates that civil society has a rightful place at the decision-making table but also ensures greater accountability from governments. However, many CSOs are unable to participate in these processes because, one, they are unaware they can access these decision-making spaces, and two, they do not have ECOSOC status and/or rely on large international organizations to represent their perspectives.

Globally, there is a persistent disconnect between the commitments states make at the international level and the policies they implement domestically. Canada is no exception. Strengthening and increasing CSO engagement in UN processes, particularly from national organizations, can help bridge this gap. Additionally, equipping CSOs with the tools to engage effectively will strengthen their capacity to advocate for human rights both at home and in multilateral fora.

This event will try to provide more information about how to get access to the ECOSOC Status, its challenges and benefits.
